Donald C. Melton, 73, of Mt. Vernon, died 2:54 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2014, at his home in Mt. Vernon.
He was born Saturday, Oct. 26, 1940, in Mt. Vernon, the son of Theodore and Ethel (Loss) Melton.
Don served in the U.S. Army, worked for the Illinois Department of Transportation and was a member of the Baptist faith.
He is survived by his sister, Donna Adams of Mt. Vernon and several nieces and nephews, including Mike and Stephanie Melton of Bonnie and Anthony Melton of Cartter.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Gary Melton (who perished along with him in the fire) and Russell Melton.
A celebration of life service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 2, at Lebanon Missionary Baptist Church in Mt. Vernon with the Rev. Gary Davenport officiating. The chaplain of Mt. Vernon American Legion Post 141 will conduct a flag presentation service.
The Melton family will greet friends from 1 p.m. until the time of service at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 2, at Lebanon Missionary Baptist Church in Mt. Vernon.
