Gary E. Melton, 72, of Mt. Vernon, died 2:54 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2014, at his home in Mt. Vernon.
He was born Sunday, Nov. 2, 1941, in Mt. Vernon, the son of Theodore and Ethel (Loss) Melton. He was married to Patsy Morgan Chelf.
Gary was a truck driver and construction worker. He was a member of Lebanon Missionary Baptist Church in Mt. Vernon, the Southern Illinois Crappie Association, The Hunt & Retriever Club and Teamsters Local 50 and he enjoyed dancing.
He is survived by two sons, Mike Melton and wife Stephanie of Bonnie and Anthony Melton of Cartter; five grandchildren, Collin Melton of Cartter, Jaime Childers and husband Derrick of Mt. Vernon, Danielle Melton of Mt. Vernon and Daniel Melton and Joshua Melton of Bonnie; six great-grandchildren, Matthew, Paige and Preston Utlaut of Mt. Vernon and Teggan, Jessica and Adeline Childers of Mt. Vernon; sister, Donna Adams of Mt. Vernon; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Don Melton (who perished along with him in the fire) and Russell Melton; and his loving dog “Shadow”.
A celebration of life service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 2, at Lebanon Missionary Baptist Church in Mt. Vernon with the Rev. Gary Davenport officiating.
The Melton family will greet friends from 1 p.m. until the time of service at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 2, at Lebanon Missionary Baptist Church in Mt. Vernon.
