Betty Jo Hayes, 88, of Mt. Vernon, died 12:51 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 27, 2014, at Mt. Vernon Countryside Manor in Mt. Vernon.
She was born Saturday, Feb. 27, 1926, in Jefferson County, the daughter of Rupert Earl and Nellie Marie (Osborne) Chamness. She married William Everett “Bill” Hayes on Feb. 27, 1944, in Mt. Vernon and he preceded her in death on Sept. 28, 1988.
Betty Jo was a secretary, bookkeeper and homemaker, an election judge and a Girl Scout leader. She was very actively involved in the schools where her children attended, was an avid bowler and a member of Central Christian Church in Mt. Vernon.
She is survived by four children, Larry Everett Hayes and wife Reba of Amarillo, Texas, Sherry Lynn Honn and husband Max of Mt. Vernon, Vikki Jo Swan and husband Terry of Mt. Vernon and Joy Ann Bodine and husband Wesley of Mt. Vernon; four grandchildren, Bill Schuster and wife Staci of Mt. Vernon, Greg Swan of Mt. Vernon, Heather Swan of Mt. Vernon and Matt Stanley of Mt. Vernon; six great-grandchildren, Cole, Chloe, Zane and Peyton Swan and Neal and Olivia Schuster; stepgrandchildren, Jake Honn and wife Shannon of Corvallis, Ore., Jarrick Honn and wife Fran of Charleston, Jaydon Honn and wife Amanda of Charleston, Shawn Bodine and wife Terri of St. Louis, James Bodine of Mt. Vernon and Meagan Hays and husband Ryan of Mt. Vernon; stepgreat-grandchildren, Aby and Lizzy Honn, Violette and Lilly Honn, Noah, Olivia and Gabriel Bodine and Gage Hays; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her brother, Joe Chamness; and her stepfather and stepmother, Elmer Faulkner and Eva Chamness.
Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon with the Rev. Merle Fullerton officiating. Interment will be at Bethel Memorial Cemetery in Mt. Vernon.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon.
