---- — Joan Blanks, 79, of Mt. Vernon, passed away Sunday, March 2, 2014, at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis.
Joan was born April 10, 1935, in Baltimore, Md., a daughter of George and Nadine (Peters) McAlister. She married Gale H. Blanks on Dec. 12, 1951, in Salem, and he preceded her in death on Aug. 20, 2012.
Mrs. Blanks was a member of the Meadowbrook Christian Church. She was a very devoted Christian.
Joan is survived by her daughter, Nancy Sue “Susie” Phillips of Mt. Vernon; daughter-in-law, Kathy Brennan of Sterling, Maine; three grandchildren, Rachael Phillips and fiance Christopher Dobbs, Benjamin Phillips, both of St. Louis and Amy Phillips of Mattoon; three brothers, Carl Sanders and wife Susan, Ronnie Sanders and wife Beverly and Butch Sanders; and a sister, Ruth Brooks.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gale H. Blanks; parents, George and Nadine (Peters) McAlister; two sons, Larry Richard “Dickie” Blanks and Dennis Blanks; stepfather, Kermit Sanders; brother, Larry Sanders; and sister, Nancy Covington.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, March 7, 2014, at Newell Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon with Pastor Mike Sheets officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Vernon Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Woodlawn.
The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until the service time at the funeral home on Friday.
