---- — Parkes Shewmake, 83, passed away Monday, Dec. 9, 2013, in Forth Worth, Texas.

The son of Art and Alice Shewmake, Parkes was born Oct. 12, 1930, in Mt. Vernon. He married Melba Blair from Throckmorton, Texas, Oct. 6, 1953, in Oklahoma.

Parkes served in the U.S. Army. He was president of the Midland Jr. Chamber of Commerce and received awards from both city and state. He was honored as Who's Who in Texas and International as an outstanding business entrepreneur.

Parkes was in the oil business, both production and sales, an auctioneer and general contractor in California. He had always been in business for himself. He loved doing for others and his love and pride for his wife, children and grandchildren was his life. He will be greatly missed.

Parkes never met a stranger. He loved flying planes, golfing and his horses. When God made him he threw away the pattern. He wasn't finished with his goals, but God called him home.

He is survived by wife, Melba Shewmake of Granbury, Texas; children, Rick of Weatherford, Texas, Jerry and wife Vicky of Weatherford, Texas, Sandra of Granbury, Texas and Craig of Granbury, Texas; grandchildren, Shannon Shewmake, Scott Shewmake and wife Sara, Jeri Shewmake, Bradley Smewmake and wife Donnalee, Kellie Shewmake and Brandon Shewmake; six great-grandchildren; brother, Art Shewmake and wife Sharon of Woodlawn; and sisters, Mary Allen and husband Donald of Matton and Charlotte Moore of Woodlawn.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Jackie Young.

Graveside service will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery in Dallas.

Visitation will be held 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Wiley Funeral Home in Granbury, Texas.
