Margaret Helen Miller, 84, of Mt. Vernon, died at 7:38 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 28, 2013, at Good Samaritan Regional Health Center in Mt. Vernon.
Margaret was born Tuesday, March 26, 1929, in Humboldt, Kan., to Boniface and Genevieve Kathleen (Feeney) Setter. She married Earnest Jeane Miller on Oct. 15, 1948, in St. Clement Catholic Church in McLeansboro. Jeane preceded Margaret in death on April 30, 1981.
Margaret is survived by her son, Carl Miller and wife Donna of Mt. Vernon; daughter, Jeannie Baker and husband Butch of Bluford; son, Eric Miller and wife Christine of Highland; son, Patrick Miller of Birdseye, Ind.; sister, Jean Barnett of Bloomington; grandchildren, Anne Baker of Bluford, Erin Miller of Madison, Wis., Kelly Zappia and husband Phil of Highland, Andrew Miller of Mt. Vernon, Adam Miller of Indiana, Derek Miller of Indiana, and Dennis Miller of Indiana; great-granddaughter, Dillan Zappia of Highland; and several nieces and nephews from the Manning and Barnett families.
Her father, Boniface Setter; mother, Genevieve (Feeney) Setter; stepfather, Bill Ellison of McLeansboro; grandson, Joshua Miller of Mt. Vernon; sister, Mary Manning and husband Calvin of Glendale, Ariz.; and brother-in-law, Kenneth Barnett of Bloomington; preceded her in death.
At age 12 after the electrocution of her father and the remarriage of her mother to Bill Ellison of Humboldt, Kan., Margaret, along with her mother, stepfather and sisters moved to McLeansboro in 1941, as part of the oil boom. Her stepfather, Bill, was employed by the Texas Company as a foreman in the local oil fields. They arrived by train in McLeansboro in the middle of the night, not knowing anyone. McLeansboro proved to be a great home for the family. Many of Margaret’s closest friends were people she grew up with and attended school with in McLeansboro.
Margaret worked for some local businesses in Mt. Vernon, usually in the bookkeeping department. Her favorite job was working for the law firm of Hanagan and Dousman, where she greatly enjoyed working with attorneys Bill Hanagan and Bill Dousman.
She loved being with family and friends, traveling, golfing and playing cards. Margaret played in a card club with the same group of close friends for over 45 years. Margaret and Jeane were great parents, always supporting their children in their activities and providing a loving home where friends were welcome.
