Jim Mamer, 90, died Friday, Jan. 31, 2014, at Heritage Health and Rehabilitation in Streator.
Jim was born Aug. 30, 1923, in Pine Lawn, Mo., the son of Homer and Stella (Caudle) Mamer. He married Doris Stevens on June 1, 1946, in Henderson, Ky.; she preceded him in death Dec. 25, 1995.
Visitation was held Monday, Feb. 3, 2014, at Elias Funeral Home in Streator from 4 to 7 p.m. Services will be held today at 1 p.m. at the Elias Huneral Home, officiated by the Rev. Bill Niebuhr. Pallbearers will be Michael, Matthew, Nick and Hunter Mamer, Jeff Bressner and Ben Hiltabrand. Burial will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park.
Jim is survived by children, James (Lynn) Mamer of East Peoria, Steven (Pam) Mamer of Streator and Diane (Alan) Bressner of Streator. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Michael (Lisa) Mamer, Matthew (Heidi) Mamer, Jodi (Ben) Hiltabrand, Jeffrey (Stephanie) Bressner, Steve “Nick” Mamer, Staci (Jon Tacadena) Mamer and Jackie (Jake Cinnamon) Mamer. He also was the proud “Little Papa” to eight great-grandchildren,: Makayla, Hunter, Kyah, Peyton, Logan, Camden, Madelyn and Luke.
He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, five sisters and one brother.
Jim worked with the CCCs at the age of 16, and was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy. He retired from Owens-Illinois after 20 years of service, and also owned and operated Mamer’s Bakery for 17 years, where his pastries became legendary. He then worked for Steve’s Bakery until his retirement at age 87. Jim was an avid collector of antique cars and one of the original founders of the Midstate Jeepster Association.
Memorials may be directed to St. Jude Research Hospital or charity of the donor’s choice.
The family would like to thank the staff of Heritage Health and Rehabilitation, St. Mary’s Hospital, Dr. Ricca and Dr. Nomani for the wonderful care he received these past few months.
