Ida M. Edwards, 95, of Texico, passed away at 11:47 p.m. Friday, Jan. 31, 2014, at Good Samaritan Regional Health Center.
She was born May 12, 1918, in Grenada, Miss., the daughter of Leroy and Bertha (Beck) Hill. She was married to the late Rev. Charlie T. Edwards.
Mrs. Edwards was a longtime member of Pavey Chapel Christian Methodist Episcopal Church where she served on the Stewardess Board and was president of the local lay organization. A licensed foster parent, she was a member of the Foster Parent Association. She and her husband were lifetime members of the NAACP fighting for equality of all.
She is survived by a sister, Edna Edwards of Mt. Vernon; her children, Charlie (Tina) Edwards Jr. of Las Vegas, Bertha (James) Peoples of Aurora, Bernice McWilliams of Mt. Vernon, Doris (Henry) Campbell of Los Angeles, Dr. Ann (Dr. Robert) Beck of Paraguay, South America, attorney Benjamin Edwards of St. Louis, Ruby (Rev. Hosea) Jackson of St. Charles, Mo., Dr. Darlene (Dr. Michael) Little of Phoenix, Donald R. Edwards of St. Louis, Kenneth D. Edwards of Phoenix, Linda K. Ledbetter, Manastas, Va., Cynthia Whitfield of Mt. Vernon, Michael W. Edwards of Sparta, Mark (Lolita) Edwards of Chicago, Jonathan Edwards of St. Louis and Devin Edwards of Mt. Vernon; God daughter, Willette Cisco of Los Angeles; a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, great-great-great grandchildren, and a number of nephews and nieces.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter Claudia, one sister and two brothers.
A celebration of Mrs. Edwards’ life will be held at noon Saturday, Feb. 8, 2014, at Shiloh Baptist Church in Mt. Vernon with Dr. Patrick Rice and the Rev. Jeff Campbell officiating. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. until the service time Saturday at the church.
