William Mendell “Daddy Bill” Fulford, 81, of Mt. Vernon, died at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2014, at home with his family.
He was born on Nov. 10, 1932, in Mattoon, the son of Mendell M. and Elva (Rose) Fulford. On Dec. 26, 1953, in Mt. Vernon, he married Sharon Mitchell and she preceded him in death on Jan. 7, 1997. He later married Georgia Quinn and she survives him in Mt. Vernon.
He served in the United States Navy during the Korean War and in later years he entertained many with stories of his time in the service, whether aboard ship or while stationed in the Philippines. He later worked as a farmer, a contractor and as a coal miner with Inland Steel Coal Company. He and his family later owned and operated the Press Box Sports Bar and Grill. He was a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1376 and was a member of American Legion Post 141 of Mt. Vernon, Mt. Vernon Elks (B.P.O.E.) Lodge 819 and United Mine Workers of America. He was a member of Logan Street Baptist Church. He loved spending time with his family and all his friends.
He is survived by one daughter, Kim Karcher and partner Sandie Leonard; one son, Brent Fulford and fiancee Jacqueline Soto; three grandchildren, Kurt Karcher and wife Brandy, Lynn Hutchison and husband Laramie and Meaghan Fulford; four great-grandchildren, Landon and Levi Hutchison and the expected Karcher twins; one niece, Lisa Snyder and husband Mark; friend, Steve Fisher; and former wife, Georgia Quinn and her daughter Gina Lisenby.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Sharon Fulford; one son, Mitch Fulford; and two brothers, Karl “Slatz” Fulford and Bob Fulford.
As per his wishes, his body was cremated and his ashes will be buried at sea by the United States Navy.
Memorials may be made to the United Way of South Central Illinois and will be accepted at the Osborn Funeral Home in Dix, who is in charge of arrangements.
