---- — Randall Lee Jenkins, 86, of Mt. Vernon, lost his battle with multiple myeloma and returned to his Heavenly home at 8:06 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 6, 2014.
Randall was born in Dahlgren on Sunday, April 10, 1927, to Russell Fields and Dora Madeline (Miller) Jenkins.
He attended Dr. Andy Hall Grade School, Casey Junior High School and Mt. Vernon Township High School. Immediately upon graduating high school in 1945, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corp and after basic training was shipped out to the Pacific Theater when the Japanese surrendered. He completed his Marine Corp service in Florida.
During his junior high and high school days, Randall worked as an usher at the Granada Plaza and Stadium theaters. After completing his Marine Corp service he went to work as a draftsman for Wagner Electric. Upon Wagner’s relocation to St. Louis, he worked for Country Companies Insurance. Randall completed his working years with the United States Post Office. He started as a postal clerk, becoming a substitute city carrier. He carried every route in the city before becoming a letter carrier and earning his own city route.
Randall married Betty Lou Anthis on Nov. 22, 1950, at Logan Street Baptist Church in Mt. Vernon. Randall and Betty are the proud parents of four children, Renee Jenkins, Randy Jenkins and wife Valerie, Shelley Gordon and husband Ken, all of Mt. Vernon and Rick Jenkins and wife Kay of Cynthiana, Ind. Randall and Betty are the proud grandparents of 12 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
Randall was a longtime member of Logan Street Baptist Church. During his membership he served as a deacon, trustee, property and space committee member, junior department Sunday school director, intermediate department Sunday school director, combined junior high and high school department Sunday school director and an adult department Sunday school director. Randall was instrumental in the church bus ministry in the 1960s and 1970s. He was a puppeteer, set designer and builder and general roustabout for the puppet ministry. In later years, he was the food pantry director, church greeter and substitute Sunday school secretary and agreed to serve as an active deacon when his church requested him once again.
Randall was involved in many civic and volunteer works. He coached a Logan Street team for many years in the Jefferson County Church Basketball League. He served on the Bethel and Old Union Grade School boards. He served as president of the Mt. Vernon Recreation Club, president of the Northeast Water Company, Shiloh Township trustee and Shiloh Township clerk. He was a member of NARFE and the Mt. Vernon American Legion Post 141.
As long as he was able Randall enjoyed meeting with retired buddies at the 27th street McDonald’s for morning coffee and local “news”.
Randall is survived by one sister, Madeline Orrick and husband John of High Ridge, Mo.; one brother-in-law, Bob Anthis and wife Margaret of Dana Point, Calif.; and one sister-in-law, Jane Lynn of Mt. Vernon. He is also survived by his 12 nieces and nephews and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.
Randall was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Ralph Jenkins; one sister-in-law, Pat Jenkins; one brother-in-law, Bill Anthis; one niece, Debra Lynn Anthis; and one nephew, Gary Dean Anthis.
Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Logan Street Baptist Church in Mt. Vernon with the Rev. David Krueger officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Vernon Memorial Gardens in Woodlawn. Members of the Mt. Vernon American Legion Post 141 will conduct full military honors at the cemetery.
Visitation will be from 1:30 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Logan Street Baptist Church in Mt. Vernon.
