Dorothy Marilee Henderson, 82, of Mt. Vernon, died 5:50 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 2, 2014, at her home.
She was born Saturday, Dec. 5, 1931, in Central City, the daughter of Warren David Hardy, Sr. and Mabel Marie (Wilson) Hardy. She married Lonnie Henderson on May 19, 1951, in the rectory of St. Mary Catholic Church in Mt. Vernon.
When Marilee was 14, she started working for Stadium Theatre as a bookkeeper. She was also a bookkeeper for Auto Lite, Ranmar Tires and Neal Brothers Roofing. She later owned and operated Henderson Ceramics with her husband Lonnie. She was a member of St. Mary Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, the China Painters Guild and the Prairie Porcelain Painters. She was a very talented artist. Marilee was the family caregiver. She was very compassionate and loving. She was a very devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She is survived by two daughters, Joan Gregory and husband Mike of Woodlawn and Jane Henderson of Mt. Vernon; four grandchildren, Emily Voyles and husband Daniel of O’Fallon, Pamela Gregory of Mt. Vernon, Cory Gregory of Austin, Texas and Cassidy Pathak and husband Alok of St. Louis; five great-grandchildren, Erich and Amaya Voyles, Camden Meyer, Luis Jara and Aradhana Pathak; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one brother, Warren D. Hardy, Jr.; and one sister and best friend, Loretta Langa.
Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in the chapel at Mt. Vernon Memorial Gardens in Woodlawn with Elder Tom Mears officiating. Interment will be at Mt. Vernon Memorial Gardens in Woodlawn. Visitation will be held from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday in the chapel at Mt. Vernon Memorial Gardens in Woodlawn.
