---- — The Rev. Irene G. Gourlas, 79, of Mt. Vernon, died 4:48 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 2, 2014, at Mt. Vernon Countryside Manor in Mt. Vernon.
She was born Feb. 26, 1934, in Campbell, Ohio, the daughter of George M. and Helen (Economidou) Gourlas.
The Rev. Gourlas was an ordained minister with the General Council of the Assemblies of God where she was recognized for 50 years as an ordained minister. She was also associate pastor with the Rev. Alta Culpepper at the McLeansboro Assembly of God for 19 years. She and the Rev. Culpepper started the Evangelistic team on May 3, 1956, where they worked together for 50 years. In her later years, she attended the Harlan Road Church of God in Mt. Vernon.
She is survived by her brother, Demosthenes G. Gourlas of Dayton, Ohio; four sisters, Pauline Sylvester of Cortland, Ohio, Evangeline Wells and husband Ellis of McLeansboro, Maureen Kladitis and husband Emanuel of Beaver Creek, Ohio and Dorothy Gourlas of Huber Heights, Ohio; and several beloved nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Sandy G. Gourlas and Michael G. Gourlas.
Funeral service will be held at 5 p.m. Sunday at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon with the Rev. Blake A. Clayton and the Rev. Ted Anderson officiating. Private burial will be held at Odd Fellows Cemetery in McLeansboro at a later date.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. tonight at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon.
