Donald Kozanecki

Donald John Kozanecki, age 80, of Mt. Vernon, passed away 1:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 4, 2014, at St. Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates.

He was born Dec. 27, 1933, in Chicago, the son of Henry and Harriett (Kirstein) Kozanecki.

He was first married June 25, 1960, in Chicago, to Doris A. Brzezinski. Of that marriage two daughters were born and they survive. They are Mrs. Donna Tuman of Elgin and Mrs. Debra Mianowski and husband Peter of South Elgin. Other survivors include five grandchildren.

On Jan. 6, 1996, in Mt. Vernon, he married Stella Milliner Mayes and she survives in Mt. Vernon. Other survivors include two brothers, Ralph Kozanecki of Lexington, Ky., and Hillard Kozanecki and wife Sandy of Beecher.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister-in-law, Margaret Kozanecki; and a brother, Raymond Kozanecki who lost his life while serving with the U. S. Army at the Battle of Normandy during World War II.

Mr. Kozanecki retired in 1996 from the Mt. Vernon Township High School. He served as a custodian.

Mr. Kozanecki was an “Atomic Veteran,” having served with the U. S. Army Engineers at the Atomic Energy Test Site in Nevada from 1957-58. He held a lifetime membership in the AMVETS and was a Legionnaire in the Loyal Order of Moose. He was also a member of the Jefferson County Historical Society.

Mr. Kozanecki was a member of Southwest Christian Church in Mt. Vernon.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Southwest Christian Church Benevolence Fund and will be accepted by the funeral home.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 10, 2014, at Southwest Christian Church, 901 S. 34th St., Mt. Vernon with Minister Randy Steele officiating. Burial will follow at Cubb Prairie Cemetery in Jefferson County. Military Flag Presentation will be conducted by American Legion Post 141 of Mt. Vernon.

Visitation will be at the Southwest Christian Church from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday.
