Olva H. Phillips, 97, of Mt. Vernon, died 10:15 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 12, 2014, at Green Tree Assisted Living in Mt. Vernon.
She was born Thursday, March 2, 1916, in Madison, Kan., the daughter of John and Anna (Zimmerman) Hester. She married Marvin F. Phillips on May 18, 1941, in Kingdom County, Kan. He preceded her in death on Nov. 26, 2005.
Olva worked as a kindergarten school teacher at Lincoln School for 30 years but started her career in a one-room school house. She was a longtime member of Central Christian Church in Mt. Vernon and was very active in several ministries there.
She is survived by son, Don Phillips and wife Maureen of Dix; brother, Owen Hester of Mt. Vernon; special family friends, Carolyn Hart and husband Tom of St. Francisville and Kathy McLaughlin and husband Harry of Dyersburg, Tenn.; and several grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon with Mr. Randy Sells and Mr. J. Howard Kraps officiating. Interment will be at Mt. Vernon Memorial Gardens in Woodlawn.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon.
