John W. "Punkin" Johnson, 75, of McLeansboror, died 11:30 p.m. June 29, 2013, at Good Samaritan Regional Health Center in Mt. Vernon.
He was born Mayu 1, 1938, in Broughton, the son of Truman and Cleo (Curtis) Johnson. He married Judith Ellen Parrish Nov. 18, 1958; she survives.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, David Lee (Patricia) Johnson of Highland, John R. (Adrian) Johnson of Mt. Vernon and George R. (Melissa) Johnson of Kearney, Mo.; a daughter, Carolyn Sue (Tom) Plog of Greenville; special family members Scott, Lori and Harlie Peterson and Paul Warhoover; grandchildren, Angela Ranee (Michelle) Johnson, Stephanie Steenstra, Breanna Lee Johnson, Tyler Andrew Scott (Megan) Beel, Destin Sayje Taylor, Christian Trinitan Taylor, Courtney Ann Johnson, Amanda Kay Endicott; and Timothy (Ashley) Endicott; four great-grandchildren and one on the way; and several nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three grandchildren, David Lee Johnson, Jason Eckman and Christopher Johnson; a brother, Ralph Johnson; and a sister, Helen Jane Johnson.
He was a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association, an avid quail raiser and bird hunter. He also enjoyed baseball coaching, riding motorcycles and was an airplane pilot. He trained bird dogs and was a senior distributor for Shaklee Corp. He was a member of Old Hickory Hill Missionary Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Gholson Funeral Home in McLeansboro with the Rev. Randall Ragan officiating. Burial will be at Old Hickory Hill Cemetery near Broughton.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Gholson Funeral Home in McLeansboro.
