Bonnie Wielt

MT. VERNON — — Bonnie May Wielt, 91, of Mt. Vernon, died Saturday, Dec. 29, 2012, at her home in Mt. Vernon.

She was born Feb. 7, 1921, in Woodston, Kan., daughter of Charlie and Jessie Buttermore. She married John L. Wielt on June 16, 1946, and he preceded her in death on March 31, 2002.

Bonnie was bookkeeper for Precision Engineering for many years and later worked in the billing department for Doctors Park Medical Center.  

She enjoyed quilting and was an avid gardener and a wonderful cook specializing in bread, pies, cakes, cookies, fudge and taffy. She was a big fan of the Mt. Vernon Rams, the University of Illinois Fighting Illini and the St. Louis Cardinals. Although never picking up a golf club till age 50, she worked her way to the championship flight of the Indian Hills GC and Homestead GC ladies day groups. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Mt. Vernon, Moose Lodge and a longtime Girl Scout leader. She loved the 50-year succession of family boxers Peggy, Princess, Eddie, Eddie II and Maxine and her final companion miniature schnauzer Lillie.

Bonnie was tenth of 15 children born on the family farm in rural northwest Kansas. In order with wives and husbands and hometowns listed: Nellie and Harry Propp of Marion, Kan., Alvin and Berniece Buttermore of Wichita, Kan., Leona (died in infancy), Vernie and Neva Buttermore of Topeka, Kan., Cordie and Tom Zimmerman of Lake of the Ozarks, Mo., Paul and Velma Buttermore of Ames, Iowa, John and Edith Buttermore of North Platte, Neb., Grace and Cecil Adamson of Colorado Springs, Colo., Mary and Cliff Clay of Des Moines, Iowa, Marcell and Georgia Buttermore of Denver, Esther Ann and George Golliher of Mead, Kan., Charles and Jackie Buttermore of Colorado Springs, Colo., Leon and Lois Buttermore of North Platte and Jack and Frances Buttermore of Lexington, Texas. She is survived by brothers, Charles, Leon and Jack and sisters-in-law Velma, Georgia, Jackie and Lois.

She is survived by daughter, Debbie DeBernardi and husband Bill of Kona, Hawaii; son, Rob Wielt and April Rubenacker of Mt. Vernon; granddaughter, Erica Wielt of Palo Alto, Cali.; Haley Haarmann and husband Damon of Smithton; Ross Rubenacker of Houston, Texas; great-grandbabies, Carson and Callie Haarmann of Smithton; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, John Wielt Jr. in March of 1997; and all but three of her brothers and sisters.

As per her wishes, the body will be cremated.  A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Friday with greetings from 4 to 6 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Mt. Vernon with assistant pastor, friend and neighbor Annelle Ruemmler officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Angels on Assignment and Jefferson County Sports Authority and will be accepted at the church or mailed to Hughey Funeral Home, P.O. Box 721, Mt. Vernon, IL 62864.
