Harold Poorman

Harold Eugene Poorman, 78, of Woodlawn, died 1:15 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2013, at Good Samaritan Regional Health Center in Mt. Vernon.

He was born June 23, 1934, in Eaton, the son of Edgar and Fannie (Williams) Poorman. He married Joyce Lynn (Grant) on Feb. 10, 1962, in Mt. Vernon.

Harold “Pup” was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, serving as a Specialist (Tech3) with the Second Armored Division from Oct. 21, 1954, to Oct. 11, 1956. He later co-owned and operated J.P. Trophies in Woodlawn along with his wife Joyce Poorman. He was an instrumental volunteer for Jefferson County Operation Iraqi Freedom (JCOIF) and was a member of the American Legion. He attended West Long Prairie Christian Church and was active in church functions.

He is survived by two sons, Bryan Poorman and wife Vikki of Washington and Troy Poorman and wife Amy of Woodlawn; two daughters, Robyn Sumner and husband Robert of Bluford and La Donna Martin and husband Dennis of Green Cove Springs, Fla.; seven grandchildren, Bryanna Poorman, Hunter Poorman, Arianna Poorman, Trevor Poorman, Taylor Poorman, Corey Sumner and Ashley Martin; and two nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and sister, Helen Gilmore.

Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday in the Chapel at Mt. Vernon Memorial Gardens in Woodlawn with Mr. James McKinzie officiating. Interment will be at Mt. Vernon Memorial Gardens in Woodlawn. The Chaplain of American Legion Post 141 will conduct a flag presentation service at the cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon.

For those who wish, memorials may be given to the Jefferson County Operation Iraqi Freedom and will be accepted at the funeral home or mailed to Hughey Funeral Home, P.O. Box 721, Mt. Vernon, IL 62864.
