---- — Lloyd Pearl Purcell, 88 years and 18 days, of Mt. Vernon, died 8:07 a.m. Saturday, March 8, 2014, at Mt. Vernon Countryside Manor in Mt. Vernon.

He was born Thursday, Feb. 18, 1926, in Jefferson County, the son of Clerance and Nellie (Nelson) Purcell. He married Doris R. Smith in Hopkinsville, Ky., on Oct. 18, 1945, and she preceded him in death on March 26, 2005.

In his early years, Lloyd pastored at various churches in Southern Illinois. He was an electrician and heating and appliance repairman, was a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II and was a member of Howard Community Chapel in Opdyke.

He is survived by two daughters, Connie Mays and husband the Rev. David Mays of Edwardsville and Sondra Rainwater and husband Larry of Mt. Vernon; five grandchildren, Traci Barnett and husband Mark, Adam Mays and wife Erin, Lydia Morse and husband Jeremy, Jody Rainwater and wife Tawny and Joshua Rainwater and wife Crystelle; 14 great-grandchildren, Shantel Barnett, Mark David Barnett, Abbigale Barnett, Kyleigh Mays, Brenner Mays, Jayce Morse, Ariannah Morse, Brylan Rainwater, Kaycee Rainwater, Brianna Rainwater, Vince Rainwater, Piper Rainwater, Wyatt Rainwater and Kadden Locklear; sister, Wilma Jean Bruce of Mt. Vernon; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and one twin brother, Floyd Purcell.

Funeral service was held at 1 p.m. Monday, March 10, at Hughey Funeral Home with the Rev. Dennis Myers officiating. Interment was held at Mt. Vernon Memorial Gardens in Woodlawn. The chaplain of Mt. Vernon American Legion Post 141 conducted a flag presentation service at the cemetery.

Visitation was held from 11 a.m. until the time of service Monday, March 10, at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon.
