---- — Dee Murrell Rutherford, 70, of Mt. Vernon, died 1:15 p.m. Friday, March 7, 2014, at his home in Mt. Vernon.
He was born Tuesday, Jan. 11, 1944, in St. Louis, the son of Delbert Murrell and Virginia (Huffmaster) Rutherford. He married Sharon Kay Rumbold on Aug. 7, 1968, in Ider Oberstein, Germany.
Dee attended University of Illinois and eventually graduated from Drury University. While at University of Illinois he played football for the Illini and was part of the 1964 Rose Bowl team. He served our country in the United States Army in the Vietnam era during which time he was stationed in Germany. He worked as a broker in Chicago and was of the Methodist faith. Dee’s latter years were spent in Mt. Vernon.
He is survived by his son, Ian Rutherford and wife Nedra of Kansas City, Mo.; brother, Bruce Rutherford and wife Betty of Houston; seven grandchildren; one nephew; and one niece.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
A celebration of life ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon with the Rev. David Eadie officiating. Interment will be at Oakwood Cemetery in Mt. Vernon.
Mr. Rutherford was cremated and the family will greet friends from 9 a.m. until the time of service at 10 a.m. Saturday at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon.
