James R. “Robert” Meeks, 80, of Morton and formerly of Hamilton, died at 10:10 p.m. Sunday, March 16, 2014, at his home.
He was born Dec. 20, 1933, in Hamilton, to Cletus C.W. and Esther (Edmonds) Meeks. He married Frances Dempster Noble on Dec. 30, 1976, in Rock Island.
He is survived by his wife, Frances Meeks of Morton; one brother, Curtis (Joyce) Meeks of Fenton, Mo.; one sister, Ruth (Donald) Rogers of Benton; and several nieces and nephews.
He served with the United States Air Force during the Korean War.
Jim grew up on a farm in Broughton, where he worked until he came to Peoria. After moving to the area, he worked at Caterpillar Inc. and later for Pekin Insurance. He was an over-the-road truck driver for 40 years, driving for several area trucking companies during which time he earned a 1,000,000 mile citation for exceptional driving.
In his later years, he enjoyed traveling over seas. He also made a daily visit to Judy’s Restaurant in Morton where he enjoyed drinking coffee while visiting with friends.
He was a lifetime member of Morton Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5921 and a member of the American Legion Post 318 in Morton.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Knapp-Johnson Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Morton. Visitation will be from 12 to 12:45 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be at 12 noon Friday at Odd Fellows Cemetery in Norris City.
