---- — Nina June Wheeler, 87, of Mt. Vernon, died 11:50 p.m. Sunday, March 16, 2014, at Mt. Vernon Countryside Manor in Mt. Vernon.
She was born Thursday, July 29, 1926, in Jefferson County, the daughter of Frank Raymond and Mary Bell (Kirk) Capps. She married Elam Albert “Red” Wheeler on May 10, 1943, in Tallahassee, Fla. and he preceded her in death on Jan. 22, 2007.
Nina worked for the Mt. Vernon Garment Factory, the Mammoth Department Store, Needlewoman and later Fashion Fabrics in Mt. Vernon. Later she was employed in the dietary department of Good Samaritan Hospital. She was a member of the Jefferson County Genealogical Society and Lebanon Missionary Baptist Church in Mt. Vernon.
She is survived by three sons, Terry Lee Wheeler and wife Joyce of Mt. Vernon, Stephen Wayne Wheeler and wife Ginger of Mt. Vernon and the Rev. David Ray Wheeler and wife Donna of Mt. Vernon; two daughters, June Ann Prinnell of Manito and Jean Ann Nordstrom and husband Karl of Cherokee Village, Ark.; two brothers, Jack Capps and wife Charlotte of Atkinson and Albert Capps and wife Phyllis of Gunnerville, Ala.; sister, Mary Frances LeMay of Mt. Vernon; two sisters-in-law, Carolyn Capps of Mt. Vernon and Mary Capps of Mt. Vernon; 19 grandchildren, LeeAnn Prinnell, Timothy Prinnell, Jeffery Prinnell, Paula Pierce, Angela Nordstrom, Sheila Peterson and husband Pete, Michael Wheeler, Tisha Graf and husband Josh, Jason Wheeler and wife Amanda, LaDawn Wheeler and special friend Cody Boone, Tina Hernblom, John Wheeler, Brad Wheeler, Charles Wheeler, Brandi Wheeler, Kyle Wheeler, Mary Ditzel, Shawna Pittman and Darrell Smith and wife Gina; 27 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, John Raymond Wheeler; four brothers, Raymond, Burel, Roy and Charles Capps; and three sisters, Ruth Capps, Virginia Boykin and Grace Blindauer.
Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon with the Rev. David Wheeler officiating. Interment will be at Mt. Vernon Memorial Gardens in Woodlawn.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon.
