Cleva L. Melcher, age 93, of Mt. Vernon, passed away 4:10 p.m. Sunday, March 23, 2014, at the Mt. Vernon Countryside Manor.
Cleva was born May 14, 1920, in Woodlawn, the daughter of Hiram and Grace (Morgan) Casey. She married Joe Plemon and they later divorced. She later married Robert “Bob” Puntney on Sept. 4, 1954, in Mt. Vernon and he preceded her in death on Sep. 10, 1994. On Oct. 10, 1998, in Mt. Vernon, she married Robert “Bob” A. Melcher and he survives in Mt. Vernon.
Mrs. Melcher worked as switchboard operator for Illinois Power for many years and later worked at New Directions in the Time Square Mall. Cleva was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Mt. Vernon. She received recognition for being a fifty plus year member. She was also a board member of the American Cancer Society and was the first Reach To Recovery volunteer in Jefferson County. She was an excellent seamstress, designing and sewing prom dresses and wedding dresses for her daughters. She enjoyed quilting and was always an avid reader. She loved dressing up at Halloween. Even at the age of 89 she and Bob dressed up and visited several friends in their condo building. She had a great sense of humor and was often referred to by her friends as “Clever Cleva”.
She is also survived by her daughters, Janice Rogers and husband Tom of Bartlesville, Okla., Mary Lynne Crabtree of St. Peters, Mo., Teresa Bell and husband Kenneth of Mt. Vernon, Anita Puntney and husband Scott Borchart of Phoenix and Robyn Puntney of Phoenix; sons, Joe Plemon and wife Janice of Anna and Eric Puntney and wife Jo Ann of Mt. Vernon; stepchildren, Steven Melcher and wife Brenda, Melinda Zimmer and husband David and Beth Wood and husband Nick; grandchildren, Tommy Rogers, Jodi Faulkner, Jason Crabtree, Sara Jo Scott, Josh Plemon, Jaime Markovic, Jeremy Plemon, Jonathan Plemon, Jim Bell, John Bell, Jeff Puntney, Brian Puntney, Jonah Pulver-Puntney and Grace Pulver-Puntney; and also 14 great-grandchildren.
