Patricia 'Pat' Benson

---- — Patricia Kalene “Pat” Benson, 69, of Mt. Vernon, died 12:45 a.m. Saturday, March 22, 2014, in Mt. Vernon.

She was born Thursday, Sept. 21, 1944, in Mt. Vernon, the daughter of Kenneth R. Shoemaker, Sr. and Lois June (Duncan) Shoemaker. She married Richard Lee Benson on May 17, 1961, in Joliet and he preceded her in death on Dec. 5, 2006.

Pat worked as a beautician, the owner and bookkeeper of Benson’s Marathon gas station and was a retail sales clerk at Woolworth’s until she retired. She was a member of the Mt. Vernon Moose Lodge 755 (L.O.O.M.), the Mt. Vernon American Legion, AMVETS and Logan Street Baptist Church in Mt. Vernon.

She is survived by two daughters, Joy Ann Presley of Mt. Vernon and Wendy Lee Benson-Potts of Mt. Vernon; four grandchildren, Stephen Gregory Presley and wife Lula, Richard Alan Presley and wife Lisa, Dillon Arthur Graham and wife Myrtle and Durk Lee Graham; 10 great-grandchildren, Nicholas Presley, Stephanie Presley, Cadith Presley, Camdon Richard Graham, Dillon Graham, Jaden Graham, Thomas Michael Hull, Richard Lee Presley, Madison Thompson and Tyler Niswonger; nephew, Kenneth R. Shoemaker II and wife Nancy of Dallas; and several aunts, uncles, cousins, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two brothers, Bobby Gene Shoemaker and Kenneth R. Shoemaker, Jr.; and grandson, Gregory Presley.

Graveside burial of ashes will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Smith-Veterans Cemetery in Jefferson County with Chaplain Ernie Collins officiating. Inurnment will be at Smith-Veterans Cemetery in Jefferson County.

For those who wish, memorials may be given to the Benson family (please make checks payable to Joy Presley) and will be accepted at the funeral home or mailed to Hughey Funeral Home, P.O. Box 721, Mt. Vernon, IL 62864.
