Alma Elizabeth (Bradley) Johnson, 90, of Mt. Vernon, died 3:23 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 16, 2013, at her home at Lavender Ridge in Mt. Vernon with her family by her side.
She was born Wednesday, Feb. 7, 1923, in Valier, the daughter of Earl G. and Ethel (Brayfield) Bradley. SHe married Leroy Glen Johnson on March 19, 1943, in the residence of the Rev. Samuel McCoy in Mt. Vernon. He preceded her in death on May 4, 2008.
Alma grew up in Mt. Vernon and Christopher and graduated from Jones Beauty School in Mt. Vernon in 1942. She then worked as a beautician in several salons prior to opening her own shop at her home. For many years Alma worked for Meyers’ and Johnston’s Funeral Homes. She later was a retail clerk at Rose’s and Ivan’s Flowers. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and daughter. She loved her grandchildren and enjoyed spending time with them as they grew up and made going to grandpa and grandma’s a fun adventure. She had a passion for raising daylilies and roses and kept beautiful flower gardens for many years. She and Glen had a lot of enjoyment fishing and were great competitors. Mrs. Johnson was a member of the Old Union Missionary Baptist Church in Mt. Vernon.
She is survived by two daughters, Frances J. Mahoney of Fort Meyers, Fla. and Ruth Ann Allen and husband Ernie of Mt. Vernon; four grandsons, Stephen A. Sparks of Fort Meyer, Fla., Jonathan B. Sparks and wife Amanda of Hiawassee, Ga., Craig M. Allen and special friend Carisa Orlicz of Sugar Grove and Rick Allen and wife Lynn of Morris; granddaughter, Stephanie L. (Allen) Huffman of Morris; seven great-grandchildren; sister, Imogene Lambert and husband Charles of Christopher; brother, Billy G. Bradley and wife Rita of Eufaula, Okla.; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Thomas and Lillie (Edwards) Johnson; brother, Dalton Bradley; and two sisters, Daphne Wolfe and Chestine Sechrest.
Alma also leaves behind an extended family, a loving and caring staff at Lavender Ridge who cared for her the past two years. They will always hold a special place in the hearts of Alma’s family. Our thanks to the third floor staff at Good Samaritan Regional Health Center and Good Samaritan Hospice for their care and support.
Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon with the Rev. Ralph Wilton and Mr. Tracy Thomas officiating. Interment will be at Mt. Vernon Memorial Gardens in Woodlawn.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. tonight at Hughey Funeral Home and again from 12 p.m. to the time of service at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Hughey Funeral Home.
