Donald Duane McDowell, 71, of Mt. Vernon and formerly of West Salem, went to be with our Father in Heaven at 1:36 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 16, 2013, at Good Samaritan Regional Health Center in Mt. Vernon.
He was born Friday, Jan. 16, 1942, in Edwards County, the son of Woodrow James McDowell and Martha Bernita (Densmore) McDowell Hart. He married Sandra Myers on July 27, 1963, in Mt. Vernon.
Donald served our country in the United States Navy 6th Fleet U.S.S. Lorraine County from 1961 to 1963, in the Cuban Missile Crisis. During his two years in the service he only spent three months in the United States. He worked as a laborer for Elgin Sweepers in Elgin, making street sweepers. He was of the Methodist faith and attended church in West Salem. Donald was a member of the Mt. Vernon American Legion Post 141 and the Mt. Vernon Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1376. He loved listening to “old time” country and bluegrass music.
He is survived by his wife, Sandra McDowell of Mt. Vernon; three daughters, Karen Walker and husband George of South Carolina, Lisa Horton of South Carolina and Cynthia McDowell of Illinois; foster son, Robert Biggs and wife Patricia; brothers, Leroy McDownell, Bob Gray and wife Debbie and Jim Gray and wife Margo; stepbrother, Tom Hart and wife Linda; sisters, Katherine Runyon, Carol Kaelin and Donna Roesch and husband Mike; stepsister, Mary Kay Hart; sisters-in-law, Susie McDowell and Mary Jones; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his birth parents; guardians, Donald and Vera Gray; mother-in-law, Olive Myers Jackson; father-in-law, George Myers; grandmother, Alma Densmore; twin brother, Ronald McDowell; sisters-in-law, Patricia McDowell and Susan Myers; brothers-in-law, Bill Jones and Harry Runyon; stepsister, Debbie Dean; nephews, Harry James McDowell, Eric Gray and Tyler Roesch; and niece, Kaylyn Barthelemy.
