Rose M. (Russell) Nelms, 87, of Mt. Vernon, passed away Friday, Nov. 1, 2013, at White Oaks Nursing Home in Mt. Vernon.
Rose was born on Sept. 22, 1926, in Taylorville, the daughter of Edward and Mildred (Segrist) Russell. She married Thomas Nelms on April 1, 1945. She was previously employed at Federal Kemper Insurance. She enjoyed playing cards, sewing and cooking. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Mt. Vernon and previously a member of St. James Catholic Church in Decatur.
She leaves behind her daughters, Kay Henry of MT. Vernon and Sharon (Jim) Shinall of Decatur; a sister, Lucille (Victor) Lanzotti of Decatur; grandchildren, Tracie (Jeff) Meyer, Kevin Henry, Tami (Tim) Wittenauer, Chuck (Deborah) Henry, Trey McLean and Kelly Hale; 10 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Thomas Nelms; her parents; a one-year-old brother, Edward Russell; a daughter, DiAnne McLean of Mt. Vernon; and two sisters, Marjorie Kaltenbach and Dorothy Gunning, both of Decatur.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m Tuesday, Nov. 5, at Moran & Goebel Funeral Home in Decatur with a vigil prayer service at 5:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial to celebrate Rose’s life will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 6, at St. James Catholic Church, 742 E. Clay, Decatur, with the Rev. John Burnette celebrant. Burial with “Flight Home” ceremony will be in Graceland Cemetery in Decatur.
Memorials may be directed to St. James Catholic Church or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
