John Orrill

---- — John Wesley Orrill, age 82, of Walnut Hill, passed away at 1:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2013, at home with his family at his bedside in Walnut Hill.

He was born on Oct. 23, 1931, in Jefferson County, son of John Stanley and Ethel M. (Miller) Orrill. John married Erma Vaniece Hawkins on Aug. 8, 1954, in Centralia. She preceded him in death on Sept. 8, 2010.

Mr. Orrill is survived by four sons, Bruce Orrill of Irvington, Chris Orrill and wife Denise of Thompsonville, Darin Orrill of Irvington and Brian Orrill of San Francisco; five daughters, Elaine Musgrave of Walnut Hill, Gail Hayes of Sandoval, Vivian Hoffman and husband Tim of Texico, Lora Prior and husband Eddie of Walnut Hill and Darla Orrill of Walnut Hill; two sisters, Norma Prosise of Walnut Hill and Marjorie Loyd and husband Noal of Walnut Hill; 24 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Stanley “Pete” Orrill and Melvin “Dean” Orrill; and sister, Jessie Peoples.

Mr. Orrill lived in Jefferson County all of his life. He served in the Army from 1952 to 1954. He was a laborer for Southern Illinois Asphalt for 40 years. He served as Road Commissioner for Grand Prairie Township for 12 years. He belonged to the Laborers International 40. The Ainad Shriners, the Mason’s and American Legion. He was a member of the Gospel Group the Melodaires. He worked road construction and was very proud of the different and various jobs that he helped to bring about. He loved to tell stories of them to all that would listen. In his earlier years he did a little farming, raising cows and hogs. He enjoyed working in his garden and raising flowers.

Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Irvin Funeral Home in Centralia with the Rev. Jonathan Schnautz officiating. Interment will follow in the Little Grove Cemetery in Walnut Hill with military honors by American Legion Post 141 from Mt. Vernon.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Masonic services will be conducted by Lodge 31 AF & AM from Mt. Vernon.

For those who wish, memorials may be made to the Little Grove Cemetery and will be accepted at the Irvin Funeral Home in Centralia, who is in charge of arrangements.
