Willis “Bill” Robbins, age 95, passed away 3:42 p.m. Sunday, April 13, 2014, at his home. We take comfort in knowing that he is in heaven with his beloved parents, wife and son. Bill was a wonderful husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, brother and uncle to his entire family.
Willis was born on Feb. 13, 1919, in Madill, Okla., a son of James Polk and Maggie (Collins) Robbins. On Dec. 22, 1941, he married Evelyn “Ruth” Bullock in St. Louis and she preceded him in death on March 27, 2012.
They had two sons, the late Leslie and widow (Sue) of Mt. Vernon and Mark (Sharon) of Monroe, N.C.; three granddaughters, Lee Ann Lackey (George), Megan Robbins and Candice Cole; two great-grandsons, Daniel Morton and Dominic Barcenas-Robbins; two great-great-grandchildren, Caydee and Jackson Morton; and several nieces and nephews.
Until his retirement in 1982, Bill and his family lived in Winthrop Harbor and he worked as a millwright for Johnson Outboard Marine in Waukegan for 35 years. After retirement he and Ruth moved back to Mt. Vernon.
He was a boy scout leader for 19 years, an avid fisherman his entire life, was a greeter at Logan Street Baptist Church for many years and a member of VFW Post 9233 of Mt. Vernon. He also was a proud member of the U.S. Army during WWII, serving in England, France, Luxembourg, Germany and the Phillipines.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; son, Les Robbins; six sisters; two brothers; several nieces and nephews; and his in-laws, Mr. and Mrs. Ceaton Bullock who he loved and they him.
Memorial funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Newell Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon with Pastor Wendell Garrison officiating. Interment will follow at Bethel Cemetery. Military honors will be proved by the American Legion Post 141 Mt. Vernon.
Visitation will be held from 12 noon until service time on Saturday at the funeral home.
