Willard Dale “Bill” Johnson, age 85, of Mt. Vernon, passed away at 6:35 p.m. Monday, April 14, 2014, at Crossroads Community Hospital in Mt. Vernon.
Bill was born July 28, 1928, in Peoria, the son of Harry H. and Nellie Mae (McCallister) Johnson. He first married Alvera Hackett and she preceded him in death. Bill later married Audrey (Bushong) Rich on Oct. 19, 1974, in Frankfort and she survives in Mt. Vernon.
Mr. Johnson was a veteran having served his country in the United States Marines and the United Sates Army. He served in both WWII and Korea. He was a machine operator for Fisher Body, a division of General Motors in Willow Springs until his retirement in 1987. He was a member of the Mt. Vernon Eagles Lodge 2791 and the American Legion Post 141 in Mt. Vernon.
He is survived by his wife, Audrey Ann Johnson of Mt. Vernon; children, Gary Leonard Johnson and wife Tisha of Mt. Vernon, David Rich of Dwight and Mark Rich and wife Carla of Mt. Vernon; stepson, Harry Hackett of Charleston; two sisters, Hazel and Rosie; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and also two sisters-in-law, Nina Peacock and Donna Richards and husband Raymond.
He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Alvera; daughter, Lisa Isabel Johnson; six siblings; and a stepson, Johnnie Hackett.
Military honors will be held 7 p.m. Friday at Newell Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon conducted by the American Legion Post 141. The family will receive friends on Friday from 4 p.m. until service time at the funeral home. Interment will be held at a later date in Bethel Cemetery in Mt. Vernon.
