Toke Poston

MT. VERNON — — Lawrence E. “Toke” Poston, 85, of Mt Vernon, passed away Wednesday, July 18, at 6:45 a.m., at his home in Mt Vernon.  

He was a retired food sales representative for Keebler Cracker Company, Pillsbury and American Beauty Pasta Company. He was born Sept. 20, 1926, the son of Lawrence and Ermina Poston. He married Loretta Maxine (Somers) Poston on June 17, 1949, in Mt. Vernon; she passed away April 27, 2010. Lawrence “Toke” was a lifelong resident of Jefferson County, a veteran of the U.S. Navy and a member of Howard Community Chapel Church. He was instrumental in starting the SCUBA diving team for the rural fire department; was an avid bowler and participated in league play at NuBowl Lanes for more than 50 years. He also enjoyed woodworking and working on typewriters, cash registers and other business machines. He operated Poston Typewriter Service at his home address in Mt Vernon following his retirement from Pillsbury.  

Lawrence married Martha Humphrey on April 30, 2011, in Opdyke, and she survives in Mt. Vernon. Other survivors include one daughter, Connie Olson, and her husband, Randy Olson, of Mt. Vernon; one step daughter, Lisa Dees of Mt. Vernon; four sisters, Norma Mullins of Mt Vernon, Dorine Zei of St. Louis, Sheryl McCullar and husband Don McCullar of Denton, Texas, and Sue Weisgerber and husband Ron Weisgerber of Mt. Carmel; one brother, Lendell Poston of Mexico; three grandchildren, Mendy (Conner) Payne and her husband, Jason Payne of St. Louis, Megan (Olson) Irvin and her husband, Todd Irvin, of Pontoon Beach, and Michael Olson of Mt. Vernon; three step grandchildren, Dustin Dees and wife Amanda of Woodlawn and Kris Dees and Nockolas Dees, both of Mt. Vernon; as well as two great-grandchildren, Reece Payne and Logan Payne of St. Louis. He also had several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Toke was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Maxine; a brother, Gary Poston; and a brother-in-law, Rolla “Moon” Mullins.

Visitation will be held Sunday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt Vernon.  

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Monday at Hughey Funeral Home with the Rev. Merle Fullerton officiating, assisted by Pastor Dennis Myers.   

Entombmentwill be at the Mt. Vernon Memorial Gardens mausoleum in Woodlawn.  The chaplain of Mt. Vernon American Legion Post 141 will conduct a flag presentation service at the cemetery.

For those who wish, memorials mayb e made to the American Cancer Society or to the American Red Cross. The family would also appreciate the donation of blood or blood platelets in memory of Lawrence “Toke” Poston and will be accepted at the funeral home or mailed to Hughey Funeral Home, P.O. Box 721, Mt. Vernon, IL 62864.
