Fred Newell

MT. VERNON — Fred Marvin Newell, 93, of Waltonville, died 9:49 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, 2012, at Good Samaritan Regional Health Center in Mt. Vernon

Fred was born Feb. 14, 1918, in Waltonville, son of Oscar and Edna (Shurtz) Newell. He married Lois Marie (Gilbert) on April 7, 1955, in Mt. Vernon and she preceded him in death on Aug. 20, 2003.

Fred was retired from the Freeman Orient #3 coal mine in Waltonville. Fred was a member of the West Long Prairie Christian Church. He loved to hunt and fish. He served his country in the U. S. Army during W.W.II. He was a member of Waltonville VFW Post 9153 and the American Legion in Tamaroa.

Fred is survived by his sons, Roger Newell and wife Abby of Waltonville, Wayne Newell and wife Catherine of Cordova, Tenn., Paul Newell and wife Katrina of Dyersburg, Tenn., Gary Newell and wife Vonda of Waltonville and Dennis Newell and wife Melissa of Waltonville; daughters, Darla Burton of Woodlawn and Donna Uhls and husband Dean of Waltonville; brother, Arthur Ray Newell and wife Doris of Bonnie; sister, Nina Lewis of Mt. Vernon; sister-in-law, Bernida Newell of Waltonville; and also many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois; parents; son, Marvin Newell; daughter, Joyce Wheels; brother, Glen I. Newell; sister, Sadie Mae Dare; brother-in-law, Leslie Lewis; grandson, Jeremy Alan Newell; and infant grandson, DeWayne Newell.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Newell Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon with Pastor James McKinzie officiating. Burial will follow at Knob Prairie Cemetery in Waltonville. Military honors will be provided by the American Legion Post 141 in Mt. Vernon.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Newell Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon.

For those who wish, memorials may be made to the West Long Prairie Christian Church building fund or the Knob Prairie Cemetery and will be accepted at the funeral home.
