---- — Betty Wechsler, recently of Bettendorf, Iowa, formerly of Mt. Vernon, died Friday, June 21, 2013, at her home.
She was born Oct. 7, 1920, in Mt. Vernon, the daughter of Arthur and Lily (Cochran) Pemberton. Betty married William Wechsler on June 22, 1956, in Chicago, where they lived until William’s death in 1966.
Betty was a 1938 graduate of Mt. Vernon Township High School and 1942 graduate of Southern Illinois University where she received her teaching degrees in French and Latin. She did graduate work at the University of Chicago and Columbia University in New York. Betty taught French and Latin at Mt. Vernon Township High School for over 30 years, retiring in 1985.
Betty was a member of First Baptist Church in Mt. Vernon where she served as organist prior to her marriage.
She is survived by three children, Ben Wechsler of Naperville, Beverly Pausback and husband Ron of Bettendorf, Iowa and Dale Wechsler and husband Todd Lister of Carlton, Ga.; two grandchildren, Jenny and Billy Pausback; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her sister, Martha Smith; and brother, Fred Pemberton.
Cremation rites have been accorded. No visitation will be held per family’s request. Graveside memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 21, 2013, at Oakwood Cemetery in Mt. Vernon.
