Raymond Atchison

Raymond E. Atchison, 95, of Mt. Vernon, passed away 7 p.m. Friday, June 7, 2013 at Countryside Manor in Mt. Vernon.

He was born Jan. 10, 1918, in Jefferson County, the son of Charley and Anna (Kniffen) Atchison. He married Mildred Aline McClure on Jan. 22, 1949, at the First Methodist Church in Mt. Vernon; she preceded him in death on Jan. 30, 1991.

He is survived by two sons, Dr. Gary R. Atchison and wife Kathy of Mt. Vernon and Dr. James A. Atchison and wife Jan of Manchester, Mo.; six grandchildren, Brian Atchison and friend Cara Solon of Denver, Jennifer Atchison and fiancé Dan Luber of Dallas, Craig Atchison and wife Ashley of Austin, Texas, Beth Strautz and husband Jon of St. Louis, Kevin Atchison and wife Heather of Charleston, S.C., and Kristen Atchison of Carbondale; three great-grandchildren, Avery and Luci Strautz of St. Louis, and Kinley Atchison of Austin, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; and one sister, Mildred Atkinson.

Mr. Atchison graduated from Opdyke Community High School and later earned a degree as a college of life underwriter (CLU) from Bryn Mawr College in Bryn Mawr, Pa. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in North Africa and Italy for 33 months. He was honorably discharged on Nov. 23, 1945, with several citations and medals. Later, he joined the Prudential Insurance Company as an agent in Mt. Vernon. After winning several Prudential citations, he was promoted to the position of sales manager at Prudential’s main office in Marion. He retired from Prudential after 29 years of service. While in Marion, he served in many capacities with the First United Methodist Church and was a member of Central Christian Church in Mt. Vernon.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 14, at Oakwood Cemetery in Mt. Vernon, with Mr. Jamie Allen officiating. Interment will follow.

In honor of Mr. Atchison’s wishes, there will be no visitation.
