Donald Walls, 68, of Mt. Vernon, died at 2:03 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 1, 2013, at Good Samaritan Regional Health Center in Mt. Vernon.
He was born on Aug. 27, 1945, at Mitchel Field in Long Island, N.Y., the son of Joseph and Grace (May) Walls. On Nov. 21, 1964, at Mound City First Baptist Church, he was married, by his uncle, John Hinman, to Karen Thornton and she survives.
Mr. Walls was a carpenter by trade and also worked for Washington National Insurance Company. He also spent 16 years as a volunteer for the Mound City Fire Department and then 23 years as a volunteer for the Jefferson Fire Protection District.
He is survived by his wife, Karen Walls of Mt. Vernon; a son, Michael Walls of Pontiac; a daughter, Tammy Kay Palmer and husband Robert of Mt. Vernon; three grandchildren, Destiney Palmer, Marissa Lumpkin and Dawn King; six great-grandchildren; three brothers, Kenneth Walls and wife Linda of Almo, Ky., Edwin Walls and wife Annette of Spring Hill, Fla. and Jeff Walls and wife Garolyn of Shawnee Town; two sisters, Lola Grieco and husband Joe of East Quogue, Long Island, N.Y., and Mary Tuthill and husband Rick of Bay Shore, N.Y.; two aunts, Leah Man of Bay Shore, N.Y. and Ernestine Walls of Whitter, Calif.; and a loving companion, his dog, Princess.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Grace Walls.
Funeral services for Mr. Walls will be held 7 p.m. tonight at Osborn Funeral Home in Dix with the Rev. Larry Buckles officiating. A firefighter walkthrough will take place at 7 p.m. Cremation rites will be accorded following the service.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. tonight at the funeral home.
