William Short

William Leon “Bill” Short, age 77, of Radom and a former resident of Mt. Vernon, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2013, in Tunica, Miss.

William was born March 12, 1936, in Rockville, Ind., a son of Thomas Angus and Nellie Virginia (Prouse) Short. He married Linda Ann (Mick) on Sept. 18, 1959, in Mt. Vernon; she preceded him in death on Feb. 20, 2010.

Mr. Short was retired from Precision National where he worked as a diesel mechanic. He was a member of the Jefferson County Historical Society. Bill served as a member of the Mt. Vernon Convention and Visitor’s Bureau Advisory Board. He served in the Army and ‘Proudly We Serve’ exhibit at the museum was made possible by Bill’s handiwork. He was known as the ‘fix-it-man’ when anything needed constructed or repaired. He was actively involved in art. He was named a Senior Saint in 2010.

Bill is survived by his beloved fiancé, Rita Nadolski of Radom and her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren who he thought of as his own; son, Dennis K. Short; nieces, Karen McCoy, Denise Cato, Kathy and husband Mike Mitzelfelt and Jeanie Parshal; three nephews, Gary Thomas Short and wife Pamela Bayles, Bobby Short and wife Brook and Lonnie Short; two sisters-in-law, Doris Edwards and Janet and husband Bob Cook; and four nieces, Terry and husband David Ryzewski, Virginia Moore, Lois Edwards and husband Michael Sweeney and Susan Meyer.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; infant son, Gary Michael Short; two sisters, Betty Biggerstaff and Jennie Patterson; two brothers, Robert W. Short and Thomas Short Jr.; and one niece, Lee Ann Kirk.

A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Newell Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon with Father Dale Maxfield officiating. Military flag presentation will be conducted by the American Legion Post 141 in Mt. Vernon. Interment will be held at a later date in Oakwood Cemetery in Mt. Vernon.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 11 a.m. until service time on Saturday.

For those who wish, in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Jefferson County Historical Society and will be accepted at the funeral home.
