Lula Bell Jennings, age 73, of Mt. Vernon, passed away 8:40 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2013, at her home in Mt. Vernon.
She was born Jan. 16, 1940, in Sledge, Miss., the daughter of Jimmie Lee and Ida Mae (Harris) Spearman. She married Randal “R.C.” Jennings in Mt. Vernon and he preceded her in death on May 21, 2004.
Lula Bell is survived by children, James Spearman of Chipley, Fla., Kenneth Jennings of East Saint Louis and Amanda Jennings of Mt. Vernon; godchild, Ladia and husband Christopher Michael Singh of Mt. Vernon; three sisters, Dorothy M. and husband Lee H. Cooper of Mt. Vernon, Chestann Marshall of Mt. Vernon and Bobbie Jean Taylor of Mt. Vernon; and grandchildren, JaBril Spearman of Chipley, Fla. and Darius “Hammer” Sprinkles of Mt. Vernon.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one son, Michael Smith; four brothers, Tommy Spearman, Randolph Spearman, Richard Spearman and J.L. Doggan; and sister, Juanita “Bill” Spearman.
Mrs. Lula Bell Jennings was a member of the Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church in Mt. Vernon, where served as usher and as a mother on the mother board and helped form a benevolent fund for the bereaved. She worked as a cook for various institutions including Heart Side Nursing Home, Hickory Grove Nursing Home, Lawrence Motel, Opal’s Restaurant and the Holiday Inn. She also worked as a foster care mother.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at the Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church (1015 Conger Avenue Mt. Vernon) with Pastor the Rev. Lawrence James, Assistant Pastor Willie Green and Associate Pastor James Seals officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Vernon Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Woodlawn.
Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until service time on Saturday at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church.
