He served in the U.S. Air Force and was a veteran of World War II; he attended Oklahoma A&M and graduated with honors from the University of Illinois School of Architecture. In college and after he worked with local architect Clarence Wilson; he soon joined with Jake Gatewood to form Gatewood and Fields, Architects, which later became Clifford R Fields & Associates (after the passing of Jake Gatewood). Vernon Savings and Loan Association, Mt. Vernon Airport Authority, YMCA and The Economic Development Board. Cliff was selected as a founding trustee of the John R. and Eleanor R. Mitchell Foundation and served until his retirement on the board of the Mitchell Museum. Cliff was also a past president of the Economic Development Board and the local Ham Radio Club. He was a Jaycee, a Mason, a Shriner, a lifetime member of the Elks Lodge and past president of Rotary International. After his many years of dedicated service, he was honored with and awarded the status of Senior Saint.

Cliff is survived in marriage by his wife of 42 years, Marjorie (Howard) Fields; five children, David Fields and wife Brenda, Susan Petty, Lori Dupes and husband Cohlyn, Lilli Rouleau and husband Duncan and Chris Fields; 10 grandchildren, Joshua Fields and wife Taryn, Kenneth Coffey, Billy Petty, Ashley, Jacob, Caleb and Noah Dupes and Gus, Maggie and Cully Rouleau; and one great-grandson, Jackson Fields.
