Clifford Fields

MT. VERNON — Clifford Ray Fields, 84, of Mt. Vernon, and La Canada, Calif., passed away peacefully Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2010, surrounded by his loving wife Marjorie (Howard) Fields, his son, Christopher Fields of Malibu, Calif., and Lilli (Fields) Rouleau of La Canada, Canada. 

Clifford was born July 13, 1926, in Mt. Vernon, the son of Mabel (Standefer) and Clifford Fields and brother to sisters Pat (Fields) Humphrey of Tulsa, Okla., and Becky (Fields) Cradduck of Pampa, Texas.

Cliff graduated from Mt. Vernon Township High School in 1944, where he was the center for the football team, excelled in drafting under Clifford Ames and was a proud member of “The Alley Rats” who knew him affectionately as “Zeke.” 

He served in the U.S. Air Force and was a veteran of World War II; he attended Oklahoma A&M and graduated with honors from the University of Illinois School of Architecture. In college and after he worked with local architect Clarence Wilson; he soon joined with Jake Gatewood to form Gatewood and Fields, Architects, which later became Clifford R Fields & Associates (after the passing of Jake Gatewood). Subsequently, the firm became well-known across the state of Illinois and beyond as Fields, Goldman (Jack), & Magee (George) Architects. The firm continues today as FGM, Inc. 

Cliff began community service early in his career as a member of the Summersville Grade School Board of Education. He was a board member of The First Bank and Trust Co., Mercantile Bank, US Bank, Mt. Vernon Savings and Loan Association, Mt. Vernon Airport Authority, YMCA and The Economic Development Board. Cliff was selected as a founding trustee of the John R. and Eleanor R. Mitchell Foundation and served until his retirement on the board of the Mitchell Museum. Cliff was also a past president of the Economic Development Board and the local Ham Radio Club. He was a Jaycee, a Mason, a Shriner, a lifetime member of the Elks Lodge and past president of Rotary International. After his many years of dedicated service, he was honored with and awarded the status of Senior Saint.

Cliff is survived in marriage by his wife of 42 years, Marjorie (Howard) Fields; five children, David Fields and wife Brenda, Susan Petty, Lori Dupes and husband Cohlyn, Lilli Rouleau and husband Duncan and Chris Fields; 10 grandchildren, Joshua Fields and wife Taryn, Kenneth Coffey, Billy Petty, Ashley, Jacob, Caleb and Noah Dupes and Gus, Maggie and Cully Rouleau; and one great-grandson, Jackson Fields. Two sisters also survive, Pat (Fields) Humphrey and Becky (Fields) Cradduck and husband Mark.  He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Bill Howard and wife Sylvia.

He is preceded in death by his mother and father; his first wife Osa Lee Runge; and nephew Bruce Howard.

Visitation will be held at Hughey Funeral Home from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday.

Funeral services held Thursday at 10 a.m. with Pastor David Fields officiating, with burial at Oakwood Cemetery immediately following service.

Donations can be made to the Mitchell Museum or Oakwood Cemetery.
