Elsie Finn

Elsie Bernice (Robertson) Finn, 97, of Iuka, passed away 2:55 p.m. on June 20, 2013, in Centralia.

She was born Dec. 5, 1915, in Kell, daughter of John Harry Robertson and Florence McMeen Robertson.

She began teaching school in Jefferson County in 1934 and taught for two years, completing her teaching degree from Southern Illinois Normal University at Carbondale in 1936. Elsie taught for 18 more years in Kell; she then decided to retire and spent a year substitute teaching. When the Kell School asked her to come back, she spent another 17 years in the classroom teaching primary grades, retiring with 37 years of service.

She married Billy Finn in April, 1942, and they farmed until 1981, owning a Centennial Farm near Iuka. They enjoyed traveling the entire country and Canada in their motor home as a couple and with family and friends. When they were at home, Elsie loved to host friends and family at their farm. She lived her entire life in Haines Township and was a member of the Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church and a charter member of the Marion County Homemaker's Extension, Carter Unit. She enjoyed reading, flower gardening and hand crafts of all types.

She is survived by her niece, Janice (Harry) Curtis of Pana; great-nieces and nephews, Susan (Tim) McGrath of Pana, Jeff (Lisa) Curtis of Fishers, Ind., John Curtis of Chicago, Capt. Michael (Anne) Hettinger of Wiesbaden, Germany, and Annaliese (Robert) Pennington of Newport, Ore.; six great-grandnephews; and two great-grandnieces.

She was preceded in death by her husband; niece, Deborah Robertson Hettinger; nephew, Stephen Robertson; sisters, Freida Purdue and Marguerite Bookhout; and brothers, Merrill Robertson, Lester Robertson and Dean Robertson.

Funeral Services for Elsie B. Finn will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church, Iuka, with visitation at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at the Purdue Cemetery.

Memorials may be given to the Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church or the Purdue Cemetery Association and will be received by L. R. Osborn & Son Funeral Home of Kell.
