Vern Showers

---- — Vern M. Showers, Sr., 61, of Belle Rive and formerly of Mt. Vernon and Opdyke, died 8:36 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2013, at his home in Belle Rive.

He was born Thursday, Jan. 24, 1952, in St. Louis, the son of Russell Quaethem and Geneva Channell.

Vern was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Vietnam War and was a truck driver until retiring.

He is survived by two sons, William Showers and wife Lori J. of McLeansboro and Vern Showers, Jr. and wife Lori A. of Mt. Vernon; three granddaughters, Anna, Samantha and Morgan; two grandsons, Gage and Braden; sister, Marie Hamilton of Belle Rive; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents who raised him, Ira and Laura Showers.

Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Smith-Veterans Cemetery in Jefferson County with the Rev. Jacob Gray officiating. Members of Mt. Vernon American Legion Post 141 will conduct full military honors at the cemetery. Interment will be at Smith-Veterans Cemetery in Jefferson County.

There will be no visitation.
