Darrell Highsmith

Former Jefferson County resident, Darrell Clinton Highsmith, died at his home in Dallas on Oct. 22, 2013, of cancer. He was born in Mt. Vernon on July 18, 1934, to Ray Albert Highsmith and Vivian Evelyn (Fry) Highsmith.

He graduated from Mt. Vernon Township High School in 1952, and from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, in 1956. He served his country in the U.S. Air Force for over 29 years, retiring as a colonel in 1993.

Darrell was licensed to preach by Campground Baptist Church in 1956. In 1964, he obtained a Masters of Divinity degree from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas, and pastored three churches: First Baptist Church in Mingus, Texas; a mission in Ashton, which became the 900th Southern Baptist Church in the state; and Arrington Prairie Missionary Baptist Church north of Sims from 1996 to 2000. His military pastorates as a chaplain included six bases in the U.S. and four overseas.

Chaplain Highsmith was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Marshall; a brother-in-law, Versil Withrow; and two nieces.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Verona (Withrow) Highsmith of Dallas; daughter, Karen (Joel) Snyder and their children, Jason and Kristen of Plano, Texas; son Keith (Terri) of Lubbock, Texas, and their children Aaron (Meredith) of Denton, Texas and Leah of Moscow, Russia; brother Harlan (Barbara) of Highlands Ranch, Colo.; sister-in-law, Candace Highsmith of Southlake, Texas; sister-in-law, Valerie (Frank) Cole of Ava, Mo.; brother-in-law, Elmore (Lucinda) Withrow of Sims; sister-in-law, Sharon Withrow of Ava, Mo.; and 16 nieces and nephews.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by Richardson Funeral Home, Wayne City.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday evening. The funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Arrington Prairie (Dickeyville) Baptist Church, north of Sims, with burial immediately following in Dickeyville Cemetery.
