James A. Tucker, 89, of Mt. Vernon, died at 1 a.m. July 21, 2013, at Crossroads Community Hospital.
He was born Jan. 28, 1924, in Belle Rive, the son of James Allen and Clarissa (Hampton) Tucker. On Feb. 25, 1947, he married Audrey Jean Kennedy, whom he lovingly referred to her as his bride for over 66 years. She survives.
He is survived by four daughters, Pat Warnberg of Mt. Vernon, Linda May of Pflugersville, Texas, Marilyn (Bernie) Kroll of Lafayette, Ind., and Carolyn (David) Trotter of Belle Rive; a sister, Daphne Auxier of Belle Rive; 11 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Eudel and Donald Tucker; and two sisters, Vera Richardson and Jessie Reynolds.
Mr. Tucker owned and operated an independent insurance agency from 1953 to 1970 and then merged with partners into the Page Insurance Agency.
He served in the U.S. Army in World War II and in the Korean War as a cryptographer. He worked as a telegraph operator for the Illinois Central Rairoad for 30 years and as a substitute mail carrier. He served as chaplain of the former Dahlgren American Legion. He was also a member of American Legion Post 141. He was a former past president of the Jefferson County Chamnber of Commerce, and was very active in helping secure voters in establishing Rend Lake College.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Gholson Funeral Home in Dahlgren with the Rev. Ron Reynolds and the Rev. Kenneth Holland officiating.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Graveside military rites will be provided by American Legion Post 141.
Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association and will be accepted at the funeral home.
