Dorothy Imogene Mays, 82, of Mt. Vernon, died 1:21 p.m. Sunday, June 15, 2014, at Mt. Vernon Countryside Manor in Mt. Vernon.
She was born Thursday, Nov. 9, 1931, in Jefferson County, the daughter of Willie “Bill” and Effie Mae (Beckham) Morgan. She married George Paul “Shorty” Mays on April 7, 1950, in Jefferson County and he preceded her in death in May 1975.
Dorothy was a housekeeper, a taxi cab driver and a waitress at Opal’s Smorgasbord. She attended New Hope Webb Missionary Baptist Church. She liked crafts and enjoyed assisting the elderly. She loved spending time with all of her children, grandchildren and playing with her great-grandchildren. She loved collecting angels. Helping anyone in need was her best medicine.
She is survived by three children, Roger L. Mays of Opdyke, Ronnie E. Mays and wife Vicky of Dix and Paula M. Stern and husband Steve of Mt. Vernon; sister, Irma “Toots” Grant and husband Jim of Kansas City, Mo.; special caregivers, Billie Herbert, Bobby Kirk, Dorothy Puckett and Joyce Barker; 14 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sons, John Jay Mays and Jeff Mays; nine brothers, Ira, Dan, Irvin, Jim, Bob, Roy, Bert, Billie Joe and Ray Morgan; six sisters, Ginger Hamilton, Gloria McNeil, Lillian Daily, Mildred Mays, Maggie Ramsey and Lucy Ackley; and one daughter-in-law, Linda M. (Gonzales) Mays.
Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon with the Rev. David Mays and the Rev. Gary Davenport officiating. Interment will be at South Hickory Hill Cemetery in McClellan Township in Jefferson County.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon.
