Velma Lorene Mooney, 87, formerly of Dix, passed away at 3 a.m. on Friday, June 20, 2014, at Lavender Ridge Dignified Memory Care Facility in Mt. Vernon.
She was born April 16, 1927, in Jefferson County, daughter of Alva and Hattie Elliston (Hamlin). She married Raymond Mooney on Dec. 7, 1945, and he preceded her in death on April 22, 2010.
Velma is survived by three daughters, Dr. Jan Jones and husband Don of Almo, Ky., Brenda Ellis of Hagerstown, Md. and Beverly Bandy of Edwardsville; and two sons, Larry Mooney and wife Connie of Dix and Rick Mooney and wife Patti of Raleigh, N.C.
Velma is also survived by five granddaughters, Melissa Canales and husband Roberto of Cary, N.C., Jacquelyn Miller and husband Dave of Falling Waters, W. Va., Sarah Roberts and husband Nick of Fisher, Kari Wooderson and husband Jared of Springfield, Mo. and Leah Bandy of Edwardsville; and eight grandsons, Matt Mooney and wife Liz of St. Peters, Mo., Scott Ellis and wife Tara of Hagerstown, Md., Dr. Brandon Ellis and wife Cathy of Williamsport, Md., Brien Wood and wife Tammy of Minneapolis, Brent Wood of Denver, Tyson Mooney and wife Meredith of Durham, N.C., Caleb Mooney of Raleigh, N.C. and Christian Bandy of Edwardsville.
She is also survived by 13 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and husband, Velma was preceded in death by five sisters, Nora Holtmann, Ora Piercy, Mabel Harmon, Eula Jines and Ida Wegmann; six brothers, Avin Elliston, Charles Elliston, Walter Elliston and three infant brothers Thomas Earl, Francis and Roy; and one great-grandson, Tanner Wood.
Velma was a graduate of Woodlawn High School. She worked as a bookkeeper for the Stove Foundry in Mt. Vernon, but later mainly worked as a homemaker throughout her life.
Velma was a member of New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, Mt. Vernon. She also served later in life as a volunteer for the St. Mary’s Good Samaritan Hospital Auxiliary.
