Mary Magdalene Strickland, 92, of Mt. Vernon, died 6:44 p.m. Sunday, June 22, 2014, at her home in Mt. Vernon.
She was born Thursday, Dec. 8, 1921, in Marlow, the daughter of Edward and Lucy E. (Junkins) Moore. She married Merritt L. Strickland on May 24, 1941, in Chaffee, Mo.
Mary was a licensed practical nurse at St. Mary’s Good Samaritan Hospital (now Good Samaritan Regional Health Center) and Mt. Vernon Health Care Center. As the last living member of the Moore Sisters Quartet, Mary was a perfect example of a Christian woman, very selfless and she was a member of the Pentecostal faith.
She is survived by her husband, Merritt Strickland of Mt. Vernon; son, Steve Strickland and wife Janis of Mt. Vernon; daughter-in-law, Barb Strickland of Mt. Vernon; nine grandchildren, Stephanie Ward and husband Nick of Milton, Fla., Mike Strickland and wife Kathy of Arvada, Colo., Amanda Sheraden and husband Quent of Carbondale, Kenny Strickland of Mt. Vernon, Kristi Ortiz and husband Darien of Mt. Vernon, Kelli McKay of Mt. Vernon, Amber Smith and husband Adrian of Woodland Hills, Calif., Stephen Strickland of Edwardsville and Brook Dickneite and husband Todd of St. Louis; 17 great-grandchildren, Jason Ward, Nancy Ward, Julian Strickland, Megan Strickland, Maryna Strickland, Trenton Sheraden, Austin Phillips, Caleb Phillips, Darien Ortiz, Emilia Ortiz, Abigale Sanders, Braxton Osborn, Aubrei Smith, Dante Smith, Leah Dickneite, Isabella Dickneite and Benjamin Dickneite; two great-great-grandchildren, Damian Napier and Eden Brooks; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Vivian Shelton, Mildred Shelton and Vera Smith; one son, Michael L. Strickland; and one daughter, Terri Lynn Strickland Hurley.
Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon with Mr. Marty Mills officiating. Interment will be at Mt. Vernon Memorial Gardens in Woodlawn.
