Eleanora Magdalena Garbers, 99, of Mt. Vernon, passed away at 8:40 a.m. Monday, June 23, 2014, at Mt. Vernon Countryside Manor in Mt. Vernon.
She was born Oct. 11, 1914, in Evanston, Ind., to Andrew Leistner and Elizabeth Anna (Foerster) Leistner. She married Norman E. Garbers on May 3, 1936, in Evanston, Ind., and he preceded her in death on Nov. 2, 1992.
Eleanora was a lifetime member of Faith Lutheran Church in Mt. Vernon where she taught Sunday school for many years. She was a member of the church choir and was a homemaker.
Eleanora is survived by her daughter, Elaine Hilda McMindes and husband Kenley of Lafayette, Ind.; her son, Roger Werner Garbers and wife Jacqueline of Mt. Vernon; six grandchildren, Ronald Gregory and Anna Elizabeth Garbers, Coleen Kay King and husband Kevin, Kevin Patrick McMindes, Major Patrick Arnold Garbers and Christopher Eric Triplett; great-grandchildren, Katelyn Tyler Garbers, Casey Nicole Garbers, Madison Grace Garbers, Aaron Joseph King and Sydney Elizabeth King; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, Ronald Clarence Garbers; two sisters, Hilda Elpers and Laura Klueg; a brother, Edgar Leistner; brothers-in-law, Werner Elpers, Clarence Klueg and Arvil Garbers; and sisters-in-law, Mildred Holder, Edith Garbers and Millicent Leistner.
Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday at the Faith Lutheran Church in Mt. Vernon with Pastor Josepha Lecke officiating.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. tonight at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon.
Interment will be at Oakwood Cemetery in Mt. Vernon.
