Vera Elizabeth (Hollis) Byrd, age 77, of Centralia, passed away at 6:39 a.m. on Wednesday, July 2, 2014, at White Oaks Rehabilitation & Health Care Center in Mt. Vernon.
She was born on April 23, 1937, in Johnsonville, the daughter of Roscoe and Laura (Jenner) Hollis. Vera married Loren E. Byrd on Sept. 5, 1992, in Centralia. He still survives in Centralia.
Mrs. Byrd is survived by her husband; stepdaughter, Brenda K. Holle and husband Tom of Centralia; two brothers, Robert Hollis and wife Clarice of Mt. Vernon and James E. Hollis of Centralia; nephew, Marlin Hollis and wife Kenna of Rochester; one uncle; and many cousins
She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Ronald C. Hollis.
She was algebra teacher for Centralia High School since 1959. She retired in 1993. She was a former member of Central City United Methodist Church. She was also member of Retired Teacher Association and AARP. She received her bachelor’s degree from Greenville College. She earned her master’s degree from Northwestern. She was also member of the Raccoon Ramblers Camping Club and High School Bell Ringers. She was a member of Faith United Methodist Church. She and her husband volunteered many hours ringing bells for the Salvation Army.
Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday at Irvin Funeral Home in Centralia with the Rev. Mark Doane officiating. Interment will follow in the Hillcrest Memorial Park.
Friends may call on Saturday evening from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
For those who wish, memorials may be made to Faith United Methodist Church, and will be accepted at the Irvin Funeral Home in Centralia, who is in charge of arrangements.
