Winnifred Marrone, 86, of Mt. Vernon, died 5:05 p.m. Tuesday, July 16, 2013, at her home in Mt. Vernon.
She was born Saturday, Dec. 4, 1926, in Barberton, Ohio, the daughter of Rev. William and Louise May (Chaney) Ralston. She married Charles Marrone on Feb. 14, 1945, in California and he preceded her in death on Nov. 5, 2003.
Winnifred was a foster parent and wife of the influential contractor and entrepreneur Charles Marrone. They built, owned and operated “Marrone’s Lost Frontier” in Big Bear Lake, Calif., the largest resort in the U.S. in the 1960’s. She was a devout Christian who helped build churches and supported orphanages in Costa Rica and organized fund raisers in the 1950’s to purchase three iron lungs.
She is survived by two sons, John Marrone and wife Penny L. of Osage Beach, Mo. and Bill Marrone and wife Cecilia of Columbus, Ohio; dear friends, Pat Ellis and Karen Thomas of Mt. Vernon; nine grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and her daughter, Penny C. Marrone.
In honor of her wishes, she will be cremated and there will be no visitation or funeral service.
