Gerald “Jerry” Smith, 75, of Mt. Vernon, died 3 a.m. Friday, July 26, 2013, at his home in Mt. Vernon.
He was born June 24, 1938, in Chicago, the son of Charles and Lucille (Miller) Smith. He married Patricia Yvonne Marcotte on Feb. 2, 1963, in Chicago at St. Edward’s Catholic Church.
Jerry served in the U.S. Air Force. He was an electrician for Union Local 134 in Chicago and was an avid investor and tinkerer. He enjoyed home repair projects, beer making and taking care of his 40 acres. He was an avid book reader who loved visiting with people and was quite a conversationalist.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia Yvonne Smith of Mt. Vernon; two brothers, Donald Smith and wife Jayneyce of Montgomery and Fred Smith and partner Everett of San Diego; sister-in-law, Kathleen Elkins and husband Kyle of Valparaiso, Ind.; and 22 nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his in-laws, Armand and Theresa Marcotte; five brothers, Ralph, Bill, Jim, Bobby and Howard Smith; and two sisters, Betty Powell and Patricia Weichinger.
A celebration of life service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 2, at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon with Father Robert Zwilling officiating.
In honor of his wishes, he will be cremated and a gathering of family and friends will be held from 9 a.m. until the time of service at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 2, at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon.
