Joseph Wayne McCandrew, 78, of Dix, died Saturday, May 25, 2013, at the home of his daughter, Susan Huber, in Centralia.
He was born in Evansville, Ind., on Oct. 28, 1934, the son of Joseph Vern “Zola” and Mary Marie (Poston) McCandrew. On June 15, 1957, in Mt. Vernon, he married Sue Ellen Mezo, and she preceded him in death on Aug. 24, 2006.
Mr. McCandrew was a retired meat cutter. He attended Mt. Vernon area schools and Colorado Community College. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force and was of the Baptist faith. He enjoyed fishing, camping and studying his family lineage and history, from which he later in life discovered two nieces that became very special to him. Joe loved his family and was always ready to joke and tease those around him. He was known as “the Rock Man,” and spent many years enjoying his hobby of sandblasting personalized rocks and headstones. He left his mark on the earth and his rocks scattered across the United States. He will forever be in the hearts of his family and missed dearly.
Joseph is survived by two daughters, Susan Huber and husband Bill of Centralia and Renee Pelaez and husband DJ of Mt. Vernon; four grandchildren, Joey and Lacy McDonald of Centralia, Josh McDonald and wife April of Centralia and Jenna and Jaci Pelaez of Mt. Vernon; a step-granddaughter, April McCormick of Salem; several very special great-grandchildren; a brother, Ed McCandrew and wife Esther of Percy; and two sisters, Marilyn McCandrew and Barbara Buchanan and husband Herb of Mt. Vernon.
In addition to his wife, Sue Ellen McCandrew, he is preceded in death by one daughter, Lisa Marie; a son-in-law, Dennis Sullivan; two sisters, Maxine and Zolene; two brothers, Zola Eugene and Bill; and several nieces and nephews.
In accordance with his wishes, his body was cremated and a private family service will be held at a later date.
