Robert Elmer “Bob” Poole, 85, of Mt. Vernon, died 4:25 p.m. Tuesday, May 28, 2013, at Nature Trail Health Care Center in Mt. Vernon.
He was born Wednesday, March 21, 1928, in Opdyke, the son of Berthel and Freda Ferne (Williams) Poole. He married Nellie Minnie Hutsel on Dec. 7, 1946.
Bob was employed by Harlow Moving and Storage, delivered for Sears store and later was sales manager and salesman for Tyler Motors in Mt. Vernon, Benton and a salesman for Seeburger Oldsmobile Chevrolet Cadillac in Centralia. He served his country in the U.S. Army motor pool division from Dec. 3, 1951 to Dec. 3, 1953. He enjoyed shopping for antiques and traveling. For over half a century he served his church, East Side Baptist Church, holding several offices including Sunday School Superintendent, moderator, chairman of the accounting committee, was usher trustee and helped out with Vacation Bible School. He was also a member of Mt. Vernon American Legion 141 of Mt. Vernon and the Royal Neighbors
He is survived by wife, Nellie Poole of Mt. Vernon; brother, Fred Lee Poole and wife Margie of Mt. Vernon; sister, Carolyn Joyce Nichols and husband Art of Scheller; nephews, David Nichols and wife Lynn of Mt. Vernon and Greg Nichols and wife Christine of Nashville; niece, Susan Cralley and husband Doug of Woodlawn; grand-nephews, Dylan Nichols and Matt Nichols of Mt. Vernon; and grand-niece, Renee Zoll and husband Josh of Woodlawn.
He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.
Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon with the Rev. Wendell Garrison and the Rev. Stephen Dunford officiating. Interment will be at Mt. Vernon Memorial Gardens in Woodlawn. The chaplain of Mt. Vernon American Legion Post 141 will conduct a flag presentation service at the cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m. Friday at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon.
